THIS WEEKS FOCUS

COME COMMAND WORK AND TIMING

(Remember, dogs LOVE to run!! So don't practice the come command unless your other commands are doing well first. You want to think of the 'Come Command' as a bit of a fun burst of speed for them.)

COMMANDS IN MOTION- MOVING FORWARD WITH YOUR DOG

For the first few commands or if your dog is blowing you off- you may need to correct while giving the command. Try to NEVER stop moving forward- you can slow down in the beginning. But your goal is to be able to look straight ahead, walk at normal pace and give your dog a command and keep moving.

COMMANDS IN MOTION- YOUR DOG MOVING FORWARD TOWARD YOU

Its going to be easiest to do this when you release your dog out of a command and they are walking/running towards you. Make sure you use REALLY big body language as you step into your dog. If they do not drop into their commands- use a stern "Ah Ah". When they eventually do get to you- if they have done it right- you NEED to throw a party  and feed HIGH VALUE TREATS or throw a toy. (These commands are hard, so you should pay big for them. )

COME COMMANDS WHILE RUNNING WITH DOGS

Unless you NEED to, don't call your dog when they first run off with another dog. Running with another dog is like how we would feel if we won the lottery. FREEDOM & FUN!!!! You want to wait for a "pause" between the two dogs or when their body is facing your way. You NEED to be exciting!!! WHY would they want to leave the thing they  love the most (running and being chased) IF you are yelling sternly.
You NEED to throw a party  and feed HIGH VALUE TREATS or throw a toy. (These commands are hard, so you should pay big for them. )

DOWN COMMANDS WITH HIGH DISTRACTIONS

You want to mix it up and challenge yourself and your dog. Remember not to be the boss that we hate (yes! I said that H word) to work for. Keep them in their commands and show them they are doing a good job by PRAISING THEM. Use your dogs favourite toy, throw snow, if a dog is running around and not close- use it to your advantage. MIX IT UP! CHALLENGE BOTH OF YOU! and DON'T give up until you both get it.

DOWN COMMAND IS YOUR 'DOG RELIGION'

The down is my dogs saving grace... okay, it is my emergency command and saves my sanity. It brings the dogs high drive to a screeching halt- IF you train them that the Down means they need to listen NOW! So when you say down... you need to mean it!!!! I use my down command when my dog is being high strung, when people come to the door, if my recall isn't quite working all the way. BUT that means you better be willing to correct them straight to the ground if they don't do it!

Dog's learn very quickly that a knock on the door means excitement & an intruder/guest.

We need to desensitize them to the trigger- the bell, or the knock. Use this game to desensitize your dog and to teach them to be calm. (If you do not have one of these door bells- you can work with them near your entry way, or just work on the knock first!)
